TECwomen CIC
TECwomen is an organisation focused on empowering girls and women in STEM fields.
About TECwomen CIC
We know that across Cornwall only 4% of girls are choosing to take a computing science GCSE and
only 5% are choosing Design Technology. Despite the promotion of STEM subjects, many girls
across Cornwall still think that tech, engineering and creative digital are not “girl things”. This is
shocking given the career opportunities within the creative digital industry in the UK and in
Cornwall. Cornwall has a fast-growing creative tech and digital sector, with well-paid jobs and huge
opportunities. We want to ensure that girls and women are a part of it!
Recent research showing that young boys think feminism has gone too far is our rallying point. We want to highlight where there are still large amounts of work to be done, including making kids aware of the current imbalances in:
- The number of girls studying these subjects at school
- Pay and angel investment inequality
- Lack of representation within emerging technology like AI
We created our stop motion mentors clubs to give girls a chance to grow their creative technology
skills in a supportive environment. We’re giving them a chance to create and edit their own films
and we’ve created sessions that are perfect for their age group, with a focus on fun and
inspiration.
We created the Ctrl Alt Del Conversations workshops to bring the conversation about inclusive innovation to young people in Cornwall. In our first series of events, we will start the conversations around gender gaps and why organisations like TECgirls exist.
To continue this important work, we are calling for volunteers to help support these initiatives. Whether you have experience in tech, education, or simply a passion for empowering girls and women, your contribution can make a significant impact. Together, we can create a more inclusive future for girls in Cornwall's growing tech and creative industries.
